This is the first and longest-running hotel in India and located in Kolkata which was from a group of chain hotel of Auckland. Earlier it was re-known bakery which was converted into a luxury hotel by its owner ‘David Wilson’. This hotel was named as a ‘Wilson hotel’ and in 1865 it was renamed to ‘Eastern Hotel’ later. This hotel also feeds and satisfied hunger of Mahatma Gandhi, Queen Elizabeth II, Rudyard Kipling, Mark Twain and Ho Chi Minh. Twain also referred to this hotel jewel of the East. In 2013 Lalit has taken over the hotel after huge renovation this hotel is known as the ‘The Lalit Great Eastern Kolkata’

Jawaharlal Nehru was a regular guest to the hotel and he stayed here with his mother and wife Indira Gandhi. This hotel was built in 1902 by Britishers and it was a very popular holiday resort amongs britishers in the hills of Mussoorie. Britishers also hired this venue to discuss over third Anglo-Afghan war.
